Waiting for the most important call
Recently, I’ve read a touching story about the meeting of two mothers who were connected by a personal tragedy in a lifelong friendship. Early in 2020, 21-year-old Stefan had an accident, after which he was in a coma. Despite enormous efforts of the doctors, he was declared brain dead. The Vasiljevic family had no idea that it would come to that, but they had the opportunity to fulfill Stefan’s wish that his organs would be donated if something happened to him. Three years have passed since young Stefan's liver was donated to Nihada, which is the act that saved her life.

Unfortunately, Serbia is still at the bottom of the list when it comes to organ donation. There are almost 2,000 people waiting for a heart, liver, kidney or cornea on the waiting lists for cadaveric transplantation in Serbia. It cannot and does not have to be like that.

Seven years ago, Hemofarm together with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia launched a campaign about the most important phone call in life, which patients are waiting for to find out if a volunteer organ donor has appeared. Much has been said and done in the last seven years, but patients in Serbia are still waiting for the most important call.

As an individual, I truly believe that each of us can make a huge contribution to the world around us. We talk about small and big things that we all do for our loved ones, but also for people we don't even know. There must not and should not be borders for humanity.

I find organ donation to be the greatest example of humanity, because by donating you help others to continue living. I strongly believe that humanity is something that defines each of us, and that is why I am a signatory of a donor card in Germany.

This spring of 2023, we relaunched the campaign on The Most Important Call, to awaken humanity and provide a chance for almost 2,000 of our fellow citizens who are waiting for that call every day. That's why I invite you to join us and support the donation, because sometimes it really only takes one act of humanity to change someone's life for the better.
