Why Is It Important to Have a Mentor?

We all come into this world, with parents taking care of us, directing us towards future successes, and building our experience and knowledge about the world we live in; after that, we have our (pre)school teachers, our coaches for football or any other sport; even when the teenage years are over, there are professors to guide us through the university period. And then, suddenly, we are left to ourselves, trying to become professionals and make something out of the previously learned. And this, I have to admit, is not fair. We all still need guidance but at the same time, so little is provided to us.

EXCHANGE OF EXPERIENCES AND ENERGY

Being a mentor means having a privilege to meet people who make the future and carry within themselves a huge potential of knowledge and innovation. The very fact that their desire for knowledge and professional advancement goes beyond the scope of the faculty creates a huge responsibility for the mentor to also give his best in this process. Working with mentees creates a new opportunity for the exchange of experience and energy, which allows me to see some issues from the perspective of their generation, and this different perspective is actually the basis for growth. As a wonderful colleague used to say: ‘Be patient, understand your feelings and try to make as objective decisions as possible, but in the end follow your heart.’

LEARNING PROCESS NEVER ENDS

Being a mentor is a challenging and responsible task because mentees, being among the best students expect our guidelines which their professional career will depend on. Help given to our best students offers me a possibility to share knowledge with them and make them more familiar with the everyday life of an engineer. Having such a support is something that would have been invaluable to me at the beginning of my career. I would say to future colleagues that the learning process never ends which is what makes the engineering profession so magical.

EVERYTHING CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH DEDICATION AND WILL

It’s nice to be a mentor to someone, the same as it is nice to have a mentor. In both cases it is a two-way learning process. Mentor, as a person who has gained experience through maturing in work and life and can now see from a distance what that path has brought, but can also advise, direct and help a young person through an interactive process of exchanging experiences. Mentee can also provide insight into the attitudes and values of different generations, the problems they face through current education, as well as the specifics of the times in which they grow up. I love working with people because they are a source of inspiration. I like to learn from others and pass on my knowledge to others. This program came at the right time. As a quite active and curious as well as systematic person and because I need to operate in the organized system, I often used to be under great stress, but I have learnt a lot over time and improved myself, developing the skills through internal and external trainings on topic of people management, emotional intelligence… I advise to colleagues to listen to themselves, explore, learn from others, be good colleagues, positive, not to be afraid of making mistakes. They should look forward to things to come. Along with actively practicing dance, participating in various sporting events and a fairly active social life, I am someone who balances work and private obligations all my life, and this is precisely why I think I can motivate my mentee that with good organization, dedication and will, everything can be achieved.

GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

I selflessly share my knowledge and experience. When I have a person eager to gain new knowledge and experience as an interlocutor or mentee, the role of a mentor is truly motivating. Mentoring is a challenging task, it implies the relationship between mentor and mentee in the context of preparation for work, training for work, but it is a unique and personal relationship that requires a planned approach and a certain technique. Mentoring is always a great opportunity for personal development for both parties. It goes beyond our regular duties, guides us in the direction of thinking about our career and motivates us to excel ourselves. The mentoring program offers a unique opportunity to apply acquired theoretical knowledge in practice. Horizons expand, new ideas are created. It is necessary to use the opportunity to the maximum, to upgrade your knowledge, to open the way to improvement both personally and professionally.

WE ARE HERE TO SUPPORT YOU AND DIRECT YOU

It is my pleasure to be able to share my knowledge and experience with younger future colleagues. Through workshops and gatherings, we will open the world of practical application of knowledge to young people after graduation, which will mean a lot to them in their further personal and professional development. We will also remember our beginnings through this program, and with the enthusiasm and new energy that I believe will be brought by young future colleagues, I hope that we will encourage mutual creativity and new ideas. The atmosphere is always dynamic in our large team, every day is different, and teamwork, a cheerful spirit and a positive attitude are always present. Therefore, be open to all questions, express your thoughts and views, and we will be there to support and guide you.

IT IS SATISFACTION WHEN YOU HELP A PERSON WITHOUT EXPERIENCE TO FIND THE RIGHT PATH

Being a mentor is primarily a personal satisfaction, because you support a young person without experience to find the right path towards their personal and professional development. Participating in this program represents a challenge to invest in my own personal and professional development through the exchange of knowledge and experience with the mentee. I recommend to my colleagues to accept this challenge, if they get the opportunity, because it gives you different experience than the one of your daily work.

BE CURIOUS AND QUESTION THINGS

I had a chance to learn with great mentors and it is a process that lasts throughout the whole career. I hope that I will return to my new colleagues in the same way. Every new experience is valuable, and I'm yet to find out what it's like to be a mentor. I am sure that the learning will be mutual and that we will both get the best out of this project. My recommendation to future colleagues is to be curious, team-oriented and to question things. And along the way, the career path will trace itself.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE YOUNG AND THE WHOLE SOCIETY

Despite my seventeen years of work experience in the pharmaceutical industry, the role of a mentor, in a formal sense, is new to me. Informally, I have always tried in my work to share the knowledge and experiences with younger colleagues and to contribute with my advice to their personal and professional development, especially having in mind that in some phases of development I lacked such a support. I hope that through this program I will be able to render full support to my mentee, both through knowledge and encouraging of the innovative approach to work but also to everyday life. Besides personal satisfaction due to participation in the development of young colleagues, Mentorship Program contributes also to my personal development because learning is always a two-way process. A younger or less experienced person can be a mentor to the older and more experienced one, because of a perspective of younger generation, as well as opinions and thoughts not limited by conventions of certain work environment. Through an open relationship between a mentor and mentee we contribute to the development of new, prospective experts, motivated to contribute to the development of profession but also of overall society.

KNOWLEDGE GETS BIGGER WHEN SHARED

I believe that being able to pass knowledge is just as important as possessing it. Being a mentor is a valuable opportunity to share acquired knowledge with others and at the same time gain new experience and skills. It is important to have a good mentor at the beginning of gaining work experience, especially when the learned theory needs to be practically applied. Professional development and progress are guaranteed when there is a desire to share and adopt knowledge.

MOTIVATION FOR LIFELONG LEARNING

Participation in the program gives me the possibility to pass my personal and professional experiences to mentee but also to present the wider picture of working in a big company such as Hemofarm. Seeing work and relationships with colleagues from different perspectives is very important for future colleagues and their career development. I see my role in motivating these young people to lifelong learning, but also achieving harmony between private and professional life, because this is the only way to come and go from work happy and satisfied.

Investment in Professional Success of Mentees

In our program, the mentees are intelligent young people, students with great expectations from their prospective professional careers, and Hemofarm is certainly a company which can provide, in Serbia and in this region, professional knowledge above all, as well as the opportunity to see a positive example of corporate culture, as well as the opportunity to go through a basic level of education in the world of business in pharmaceutical industry. In this interaction between different age groups, these young people reveal to us, the mentors, new ideas and ways of thinking, having within them the energy of the new generation which is the future of development of every company.

Why is Mentorship Support Important?

The essence of mentorship support is that students, young professionals and future colleagues at the beginning of their careers receive advice and exchange experience and knowledge with the already proven professionals. Mentorship support is quite important. It is a huge advantage to have by your side the people you can ask for advice and opinion when you don't know how to solve a problem in the best way. Experienced people can often easily see the solution to doubts and/or problems you are facing at a certain moment, as well as help you perceive some additional problems you didn't even knew you had. That way, they help mentees to avoid making some mistakes which perhaps mentors made in the past.

Why is Mentorship Support Important?

Role of a mentor is one of more significant roles in life. It is a period when you should provide full support, offer guiding advice, stand by your mentee and convey him or her the knowledge which will be helpful both in their personal and professional development. The purpose of mentorship support is to develop self-confidence, build personal capacities and development plan. This process of informal passing on of knowledge and psychosocial support based on communication is important both for the mentee and the mentor alike.

Why is Mentorship Support Important?

The greatest thing about this program is that the very concept of mentorship encourages development of the culture of sharing knowledge and experience (between a mentor and a mentee), thereby supporting the idea of constant learning, i.e. gaining new knowledge and experience. Because of that, I sincerely hope that this program will continue to exist with the following generations of young students.
