Helping another person is something that always pleases God
I was young when I first heard about organ transplantation. At that time, it seemed like a great scientific achievement to me, and the idea that someone could receive an organ and continue living normally, I considered a real miracle. Even then, I had developed the belief that donating organs was something very good and very important.

My late wife Branka was a healthy woman. She worked as a deputy director at a Medical School. She helped the association for the blind and visually impaired. She was dedicated to humanitarian work; it was her calling in life.

Her death was sudden, they informed me that she had suffered brain death. The information about her sudden death was a huge shock for me and our family. I remember that doctor Knežević called me and told me that Branka was a potential donor. I immediately agreed to donate her organs!

We made that decision as a family, without any thought or dilemma. No talking. We donated Branka's organs.

We were aware that it was a good deed that we needed to do as a family. Despite being in a state of shock, and even though it meant making another decision, we knew that it was a way to do something good for someone else. It is a humane deed. Helping another person is something that always pleases God. In our moment of great pain, four or five lives were saved, and four or five families were made happy that day. I felt as though I had lifted a great weight off my shoulders because I knew there was a possibility that her organs could help someone continue to live normally. In those first days, when the grief is greatest, the fact that her organs live in others, that her heart today means life to someone, is a great comfort. When you do good for someone else, it cannot be displeasing to God.

As time passes, my grief increases, but considering what kind of person my Branka was, I am sure she would be happy about our decision. Even if I had to make this decision a thousand times, I would always do the same, because I want to appeal to those around me by personal example and raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.
