What LEGO and Music Have Taught me about Leadership, Patience and Teamwork
As a boy I loved LEGO. Then, quite naturally, I outgrew it. Life happened — responsibilities, the pace. Years later, when my son was little, I bought him his first LEGO pirate ship. Then another one. Then the third one. As it often happens, ’it got a little out of hand’, but it brought something far more important: the time we spent together, in fun and play.

During times when life feels overwhelming and there’s no time or energy for group activities, LEGO became a space that was entirely my own. It is time for me. Quiet, focused and fun. At the same time, stress relief and a way to get your thoughts in order. There are no external expectations, only process and patience. Over time, I also found the LEGO community. I joined a club, started exhibiting, meeting other enthusiasts and became a collector. One of the important lessons I learned there is that you don't have to be the best to have fun. I don't need to invent anything new, I enjoy putting together existing sets, taking steps that lead to a clear goal.

LEGO also opened the space for me to be useful to others. My colleague and I, as coaches, organized teamwork workshops in which we use LEGO as a tool for understanding cooperation, roles and communication. I also participated in organizing and finding sponsors for a LEGO robotics competition for elementary and high school students. I am honestly proud of that, because the combination of play, learning and technology has a long-term effect.

Music is the second great love in my life. In high school and college, it was a great passion: from 1996 to 2006, I was active in bands, playing, performing. Then, like many, I put it on hold. Until I came back through the biz band of Hemofarm - VIS Midoli. Music is also a family story: today my son also has his own band. I wouldn't say that I have the need to create music. It means more to me to participate. I don't have a leading role in the band, nor do I think I'm the best. And that's where the value lies - in adapting, listening to others and trying a different role than the one I have at work. It’s important to give your best, but also to be adaptable — to embrace differences and enjoy everything you do.

Both LEGO and music remind me of the importance of manual work. Not necessarily heavy, but precise, mechanical, fine. Such work requires concentration, calms the mind and helps mental health. The search for old LEGO sets, the joy of finding them, and the moment of finally putting them together, these are all small, achievable victories that restore energy.

I believe that it is never too late for a person to come back to himself. It is important to be authentic in what you do. LEGO reminds you, even as a leader, of the importance of patience, that results don't come overnight and that people are much more complex than blocks. Teams don’t „ fit together” easily, but when they share a common goal, their differences become their strength. At VIS Midoli, I especially like the moment when business and private life intertwine. Then barriers are broken down, organizational culture is strengthened, and authenticity is built, and better results always come from that.
