Caring Day
I donated blood for the first time in my fourth year of high school. I remember that there was a drive organized to promote voluntary donation. They said that blood was necessary to save human lives. Since I went to Medical School, it further encouraged me to become a voluntary blood donor. I have been donating blood regularly since then. The only time I took a break was when I was pregnant.
Five years ago when I started working in Hemofarm in Šabac, I heard that there was a society of voluntary blood donors of Hemofarm Šabac and I joined immediately. The society has existed for over 30 years and it has 220 active members, while the voluntary blood donation drives are organized in partnership with the Blood Transfusion Institute, three times a year, when the teams of the Institute come to our factory grounds. I am happy to notice that the number of voluntary blood donors increases with every drive which speaks a lot of the humanity of the Hemofarm’s employees.
Our association - Voluntary Blood Donation Society Hemofarm Šabac, has its own statute, board of directors, meets regularly and organizes various activities. We cooperate intensively with our director, who provides us with support in the implementation of the drives we organize so that they do not disrupt regular business. The collective bargaining agreement stipulates that anyone who donates blood has the right to two days off. Our company is considerate enough to ensure that, in the case of a second blood donation, we get a third, additional day off, as a form of support for the act of voluntary donation. I would like to proudly point out that among my colleagues there are those who have donated blood more than 50 times. And those stories of our colleagues also attract new members of our Society. Apart from the fact that we are active donors, and we get along well, I often have the impression that we are like one big humane family.
I am very happy that I have the opportunity to help in this way, because blood is the only medicine that we cannot make, but we can donate it and save people's lives.
I will be a voluntary donor as long as I can. And that is the wish of all who are members of our Society, which annually collects over 200 units of blood. This specifically means that over 70 people register for each of our drives, and that over 60 units of blood are collected per drive. The drive is considered successful when 30 units of blood are collected. That is why we are recognized by the Institute for Blood Transfusion as an association that successfully organizes drives, and that is where beautiful and successful cooperation with them comes from.
