Internship program Germany 2020
Internship Program Germany was completed in the period between 19/10 and 23/10 with the support of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of the Federal Republic of Germany, German Organisation for International Cooperation GIZ, and Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

Due to the global crisis caused by the coronavirus, the Program was carried out online this year. The Program was dedicated to the largest public health crisis – COVID-19, i.e. the response of the German state and Government to the crisis, the role of the German National Academy of Natural Sciences Leopoldina during the pandemic, adaptability of the business sector, political and social activism, power of the individual and of the community for positive changes in the society, as well as responsibility, solidarity and humanity, for which there should be no borders, especially in a moment this difficult for the entire world.

The participants of the Program, final year scholarship owners and master students of the Faculties of Medicine, Pharmacy, Technology, Physical Chemistry, and Chemistry were greeted by Dr Ronald Seeliger, CEO of Hemofarm AD, a member of STADA Group, who spoke on the topic of ‘Turning Crisis into Opportunity’.

COVID-19 has changed the way of life and the world we live in and made us adapt to it. Not only did our lives change, but also the way we work. What this meant for business, strategies and plans and how the employees adapted to all this were some of the questions the Hemofarm Foundation scholarship owners asked Dr Seeliger.

‘The most important for me was that Hemofarm operated responsibly during the corona and in line with our mission – caring for people’s health. We did this by protecting our employees from falling ill and thus we facilitated the completion of our following task – to provide sufficient quantities of medicinal products to the Serbian market and other markets. Taking into account that there was no shortage of medicines, we clearly succeeded in this, said Dr Seeliger. He added that ‘coronavirus caused global problems not only in the healthcare and economy sphere but also in all other spheres of life. However, Hemofarm managed to continue with production and sales and managed to achieve revenues above the market average which was a result of the consistent implementation of the One STADA for growth strategy’. He added that ‘strong commitment and entrepreneurship of our employees are the foundation of our success. In the employee survey conducted at the beginning of the year, nine out of ten employees said they were proud to work for Hemofarm and STADA Group and that they were convinced the company would come out strong from the crisis caused by the coronavirus’. ‘Taking into account the negative effects of the pandemic which are persisting, we have to continue demonstrating a high level of agility and commitment in order to remain on our growth course’, Seeliger concluded.

We spoke about political and social activism in the times of coronavirus with Norbert Bekmann-Dierkes, Head of the National Program of Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) of Serbia and Montenegro, as well as about the power of the individual for positive changes in the society. ‘KAS is one of the oldest German foundations. We operate worldwide, especially in Europe. One of our main goals is to support the process of EU integrations with full respect to freedom, justice and equality’, said Mr Bekmann-Dierkes at the beginning of the lecture, adding that in the times of crisis ‘it is most important to be responsible and show solidarity to one another’. He also added that people in Germany and Serbia are lucky in comparison with refugees who are, in the times of crisis, facing additional challenges of meeting their basic human needs and ‘it is our duty to show solidarity.’

The news in this program was participation of Andreas Wanke, Director of Sustainability and Energy Management and International Cooperation at the Freie University, who spoke on the topic of Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility.

He reminded the Hemofarm Foundation scholarship owners that 193 members of the United Nations unanimously adopted the Agenda 2030 of Sustainable Development in September 2015, by which they defined the direction towards which the humankind should move in 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and undertook to include these goals in their public policies. Joint action of governments, companies, academic and civil sector, as well as individuals is essential for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, said Wanke. Corporate responsibility is crucial for the achievement of these goals, through socially-responsible business operation without which, Wanke believes, there will be no successful business in the future since consumers will ‘rather chose the products which come from socially responsible companies and which apply the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.’

Lucian Brujan, Director of International Relations Department of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina spoke on the topic of ‘Science Diplomacy at the Time of Coronavirus’, pointing out in the introductory part that the role of the Academy is to represent the German scientific community on the international stage, to advise the Government, decision makers and society regarding the key issues involving science.

Mr Brujan said that scientists always talked and worked together regardless of borders and systems and that science could help which has been demonstrated nowadays, at the time of the coronavirus.

‘At the time of the coronavirus pandemic, Leopoldina issued six announcements regarding the measures to combat the pandemic, protection of vulnerable population groups, developing the capacities of the healthcare system and public reserves of critical goods and services, general health protection recommendations, improving testing capacities, recommendations for overcoming the crisis that include medical care and acting in accordance with the highest ethical principles of patient care’, said Mr Brujan, adding that the German National Academy of Sciences issued the announcement with ‘recommendations on how to avoid a complete closing of schools by combining work from home and going to school, as well as how to support families.’ At the same time, recommendations were given for actions during the autumn and winter that are in the best interest of public health, which relate to compliance with protection measures, increased testing with reduced quarantine and isolation periods, responsible behaviour to alleviate social and psychological effects of the crisis. Brujan pointed out.

The Internship Program Germany was concluded with a conversation between Veran Matić and the scholarship owners on the topic of ‘Philanthropic Response of Europe and Serbia to Crisis Caused by COVID-19’.

‘The different world we are entering requires us to understand that by helping others, we are helping ourselves and that this is the new key to the survival of humanity. I think the priority is to infect society with the virus of empathy, to get into the shoes of another and do everything to share, help, offer help - from a phone call, virtual socialising to concrete solutions to seemingly small problems that may be a life issue to someone – at the levels of the neighbourhood, municipality, city, state, or the world’, said Veran Matić, Chairman of B92 Foundation Board of Directors and Executive Director of Serbian Philanthropic Form. He pointed out that ‘it is necessary to make others better than you and that there should be no boundaries in solidarity. Humanity for the sake of humanity, because it should be so, and not for demonstrating power. It is very important that we all start living solidarity and empathy, that we are constantly active in that, and not only when a plague strikes us,’ Matic emphasised and added that it was especially visible at the level of Europe, as well as in Serbia, where ‘owing to the activities of the Serbian Philanthropic Forum (a member of which is also Hemofarm Foundation), the B92 Foundation, and the Coalition for Charity, almost 190 million dinars were collected in money donations, and over 10 million dinars in goods, since March 2020, for supporting the healthcare system of the Republic of Serbia.’
