Ivanka Popovic - winner of the Excellence Award 2020

This year's 'Excellence Award 2020' awarded by Hemofarm Foundation went to Prof. Dr. Ivanka Popović, Rector of the University of Belgrade. This is the third year since the award has been given to prominent individuals and institutions for their contribution to the development of health, culture and education, and this year, in accordance with epidemiological measures, the award ceremony was organized online via Hemofarm Foundation website.

Recognition for excellence was awarded to Prof. Dr. Ivanka Popović for her dedicated work with students, with a resolute commitment to preserving the integrity and reputation of the University, as an institution of public importance. 'We believe that this award will encourage Rector Popović to persevere in her efforts to improve the quality of teaching and science, and that the values that are assigned to the laureate of this award - integrity, ethics, honesty and culture of dialogue will be the values that will guide society in Serbia', it is pointed out in the explanation of the decision of the Award Committee.

This year's winner joined the previous laureates Vigor Majić, the director of the Science Center 'Petnica' and Prof. Dr. Elka Stefanova, neurologist and founder of the Center for Memory Disorders and Dementia at the Clinical Center of Serbia. In addition to the statue in the shape of a crane, which symbolizes perseverance and longevity, the work of the artist Aleksandar Vac, the award is also a monetary part as an incentive for further development of projects and ideas.

Prof. Dr. Ivanka Popović, author or co-author of more than 85 scientific papers, published in international or national journals and winner of the Medal of the Serbian Chemical Society for success and excellence in science, was elected rector of the University of Belgrade in 2018.

'It is really a privilege to be in the company of such distinguished laureates of this award. I would like to thank Hemofarm Foundation and Hemofarm for considering me in general for such a prestigious award. It’s a really special honor for me. I would like to especially thank my home Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, which enabled me to practice my profession, but also the Serbian Chemical Society, which also influenced my professional path and means a lot to me and I believe that its work in Serbian society is exceptionally significant', Prof. Dr. Popović said during the presentation of the award and added that she would share the award with the Serbian Chemical Society.

The CEO of Hemofarm Dr. Ronald Seeliger also congratulated the laureate.

'This year has shown us that humanity is the most important thing in society and that only kindness and compassion can help the world cope with the global crisis. And that is why it is important that this year we reward those who deserved to wear the emblem of excellence in this difficult year. I am proud that Professor Popović is this year's laureate, because she is an extraordinary example of how to represent, organize and promote a university, but also encourage an open and constructive dialogue with students,' Seeliger said.

Hemofarm Foundation has the status of the leading foundation in the country and in 27 years of social engagement, it has carried out more than 2,200 activities worth around 13 million euros. In addition to direct support to the health system of Serbia and the countries of the region, as well as numerous projects in the field of education and culture, the Foundation is actively committed to increasing the number of donors and organ transplants in Serbia.
